Hello, thanks for
visiting, my name is Lance Warren. This website is all about the build of my two Mazda Cosmo's. Both of which
are a powered by Mazda's 20B triple rotor engine.
Both cars have gone through major changes during their respective
builds, this site will detail this and you will also be able to see pictures of my cars at
various car shows in Australia and New Zealand.
What is a Mazda Cosmo? you may ask... Well, Mazda have produced
many rotary powered cars over the last 30 years and one of these has been the Cosmo, this
model was only ever sold in Japan, but variants of some models were exported to Australia,
New Zealand and the US.
The very first rotary powered car produced was called a
"Mazda Cosmo" this was way back in 1967 and it was powered by a 2 rotor(10A)
engine. This car was exported in very limited numbers and was called a 110S outside of
Japan.
Mazda have made 4 models of the Cosmo, they were in 1967, 1975,
1982 and 1990. The 1975 model was exported outside of Japan and was known to us as an RX5.
It wasn't very popular due to its design, however it was powered by the new 13B rotary
engine.
Next was the 1982 Cosmo, which was never exported outside of
Japan. This Cosmo known as the "HB" Cosmo was very advanced for its day,
featuring the world's first Fuel Injected and Turbo Charged Rotary. It's 12A EFI Turbo
engine was proven on a test oval in Japan, driving for 24 hours non-stop at 125mph
(200km/h). The HB Cosmo was for a short time, Japan's fastest production car. It also had
an impressive .32 drag co-efficient.
A very similarly styled piston engine version of the HB Cosmo was
sold outside of Japan as a Mazda 929.
In 1990 Mazda released their best one yet, it was called the
"JC Cosmo". It featured the worlds first 3 rotor and sequential Twin Turbo
Charged engine producing an amazing 300bhp and 402Nm of torque. The chasis that carries
this engine is equally as impressive. This Cosmo also featured the worlds first GPS
Satelite Navigation system. There are so many other outstanding features of this model,
They can be viewed in detail in this website.
I spent from the age of 14 to 26 living in New Zealand, where in
1988 Japanese import cars started to flood the market due to relaxed import laws. It was
in 1989 when I discovered the Mazda Cosmo.
I purchased a 1984 Cosmo Coupe "twin B pillar, pop up
headlight model", this was used as my daily driver for 2 years and during this time I
spent around $30k modifying it until it was stolen in early 1992.
I liked the shape of the Cosmo, especially once it had been
lowered and nice wheels fitted.
It was in late 1991 when I discovered the JC Cosmo after reading
about it in a magazine. I thought it was absolutely amazing and dreamed of owning one some
day.
In 1993 I bought another HB Cosmo and had plans of building an
awesome street machine out of it. Initially with its stock 12A Turbo fitted, I performed
the standard mods like exhaust, intake and boost increase. After getting use to the 200hp
of the 12A, I decided to fit a 3rotor 20B for the ultimate in power. Not wanting to do
anything by halves, this project took nearly 3 years to complete.
Just before moving back to Australia in late 1996, special
circumstances allowed me to purhase a 1991 JC Cosmo for a about 1/3 of its actual value. I
now have both cars here with me in Australia, and I have started to modify this Cosmo
also. The build of my JC Cosmo has come a long way in the last year.
Check out some quick facts of my HB and JC Cosmo below, detail of
these builds can be found further in the website.
